Kejriwal favours debate on President's remark

"I am happy that this is being debated now," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said while reacting to President Pranab Mukherjee’s veiled criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday favoured a healthy and all encompassing debate in public and among political parties on the President Pranab Mukherjee’s remark "populist anarchy cannot be a substitute for governance".

In his customary Republic Day eve address, Mr. Mukherjee made the comment that "the government is not a charity shop’’ and also cautioned against hypocrisy in public life. "Elections do not give any person the licence to flirt with illusions. Those who seek the trust of voters must promise only what is possible," the President said in an apparent reference to the newbie AAP.

When asked about his comments on the President’s observation and note of caution, Mr. Kejriwal who attended the customary At Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan said: "This is one view which was expressed by the President. There should be open discussion and debate on it. This will also be healthy for our democracy."

Referring to his two-day protest sit-in near Rajpath demanding action against erring police personnel in Delhi, Mr. Kejriwal told journalists that his `dharna’ was to demand accountability of the police.

"I and my government are here to ensure safety of the people, particularly women, in the Capital. Whatever we are doing is happening for the first time, we are taking up issues of common people. Our attempt is not to weaken democratic institutions but to strengthen them and make them transparent and accountable to the people,’’ the Chief Minister who took over reins of the Delhi government barely a month ago said. AAP’s government in Delhi has been extended unconditional outside support by the Congress.

Senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said last night that the President's speech was not about AAP. ``I have full belief that President must have greater things in his mind. When he talks about anarchy, he looks towards the nation. The country faces challenges of authoritarianism and dynasty politics. I am sure the President meant the larger situation in the country,’’ Mr. Yadav had said.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed Mr. Kejriwal for staging the dharna outside Rail Bhavan defying prohibitory orders.

BJP president Rajnath Singh said his party welcomed President's remark that indirectly referred to AAP. Mr. Singh also welcomed President’s observation about the need for a stable government at the Centre.

Not anarchy, this is democracy: Kejriwal

While the media persons wanted to gauge his response to the use of the word “anarchy” in the President’s address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day, which was to ostensibly in reference to the Aam Aadmi Party’s protests, the guests mostly had words of praise for the newly-appointed Chief Minister. A few wasted no time to pour out a list of complaints to the Chief Minister.

Mr. Kejriwal patiently answered questions, thanked people for their support, gave an explanation for the hard line his colleagues have taken and even listened to copious amounts of advice. He did not lose his poise even when some guests were vociferous in their criticism of his protest and politics.

“I don’t think what we are doing is anarchy, but this is democracy and everyone is entitled to their view,” he told The Hindu. On his interaction with the President he said: “We just wished each other…we haven’t had a chance to talk so far.”

Guests could be seen queuing up to greet the Chief Minister, who was accompanied by his wife and cabinet colleagues Manish Sisodia, Somanth Bharti and Rakhi Birla.

One of the guests who turned up with a request for an appointment with the Chief Minister was Germany's Ambassador to India who wanted told Mr. Kejriwal of his President's wish to meet him.

The German Ambassador, Michael Steiner was heard telling Mr. Kejriwal President

Joachim Gauck who is scheduled to visit India would like an interaction with him, but his office had declined the meeting.

President Mukherjee who is known to step out to security cover to greet his guests was seen mingling with the crowds. Japanese Prime Shinzo Abe who was the Guest of Honour at the Parade also interacted with the guests.

Other dignitaries who were present for the At Home hosted in the verdant Mughal Garden were Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Union Ministers AK Anthony, Salman Khurshid, BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and a host of senior leaders

Leading Indicators Rose in December as U.S. Economy Improved

The index of U.S. leading indicators rose in December, a sign the world’s largest economy is poised to keep expanding in 2014.

The Conference Board’s gauge of the outlook for the next three to six months climbed 0.1 percent after a revised 1 percent gain the prior month that was larger than previously estimated, the New York-based group said today. The median forecast of 46 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a rise of 0.2 percent.

Progress in the job market and rising equity prices and home values that are boosting wealth will underpin Americans’ confidence and sustain demand. Continued strength in consumer spending, which accounts for almost 70 percent of the economy, will in turn encourage businesses to invest and hire.

“It’s still consistent with a stronger economy in 2014,” Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West in San Francisco, said before the report. “We expect a healthier consumer, better business spending and somewhat faster job growth.”

Estimates in the Bloomberg survey ranged from a decrease of 0.1 percent to an increase of 0.6 percent.

Five of the 10 indicators in the leading index contributed to the increase, today’s report showed. They included stock price gains, the spread between short- and long-term interest rates and rising orders to manufacturers.
Weaker Components

Higher jobless claims, fewer building permits and weaker consumer confidence weighed on the results.

Another report today showed applications for unemployment benefits held near a six-week low, showing firings remain muted following the holidays. Jobless claims rose by 1,000 to 326,000 in the period ended Jan. 18, according to Labor Department data. The prior week’s 325,000 were the fewest since late November.

The Conference Board’s index of coincident indicators, a gauge of current economic activity, rose 0.2 percent after a 0.4 percent gain in the prior month.

The coincident index tracks payrolls, incomes, sales and production -- the measures used by the National Bureau of Economic Research to determine the beginning and end of U.S. recessions.

The gauge of lagging indicators increased 0.3 percent.

“This latest report suggests steady growth this spring, but some uncertainties remain,” Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board, said in a statement today. “Business caution and concern about unresolved federal budget battles persist, but the better-than-expected holiday season might point to sustained stronger demand and could put the U.S on a faster growth track for 2014.”
Fed Policy

The report helps explain why Federal Reserve officials in December decided to trim monthly bond purchases to $75 billion from $85 billion starting in January, taking the first step toward unwinding the unprecedented stimulus that was put in place to help spur economic growth.

Norfolk Southern Corp., the second-largest U.S. eastern railroad, is among businesses benefiting from the pickup in demand. The Norfolk, Virginia-based company this week reported fourth-quarter profit that exceeded analysts’ estimates as it hauled more chemicals, automobiles and agricultural products.

“Looking ahead, it certainly seems like the economy may be improving at a somewhat faster pace than we saw in 2013,” Chief Executive Officer Charles “Wick” Moorman said on an earnings conference call with analysts. “The outlook for most of our business segments is good.”

Nearly every U.S. city’s economy is projected to grow this year, including areas that struggled to rebound from the recession, according to data released this week by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. All but seven of 363 metropolitan areas will see economic gains, said the report prepared by IHS Global Insight, an economic analysis company. That would mark a shift from 2013, when about one-fourth contracted.

Economic shifts in US and China batter markets

The ascent of developing countries over the last decade has been fueled by two global trends: the steady rise of China and the willingness of the Federal Reserve to stimulate the economy.

Now, with both trends starting to retreat, investors have been heading for the exits in markets as far removed as Buenos Aires, Istanbul and Beijing, with effects spilling over into the rest of the world.

A decline this week picked up speed and spread around the globe on Friday, leading to the first sustained drop in United States stock indexes in 2014. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 2.1 percent on Friday, to end its worst week since June 2012.

But the damage is expected to be worse in places that have relied on demand for raw resources in China, whose economic advance is slowing. An index of Chinese manufacturing growth released on Thursday showed that the most important cog in the country's economy, the world's second-largest, was contracting for the first time in six months.

(Read more: It's getting ugly in emerging-market currencies)

The damage has been particularly severe in countries that are already suffering from political instability, like Turkey and Argentina. Turkey's currency fell to a record low against the dollar on Friday, a drop that will hit the purchasing power of everyone in the country.

Tapering is a 'net positive' for Brazil: Brazil's Tombini
Alexandre Tombini, governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, says that tapering will be positive for the South American country.

On a street corner in Istanbul, Yilmaz Gok, 51, said, ''I'm a retiree making ends meet on a small pension and all I care about is a possible increase in prices.''

''I will need to cut further,'' he said. ''Maybe I should use my natural gas heater less.''

(Read more: Emerging market opportunity in long term: Blankfein)

The concerns about developing economies are being heightened by the Fed's recent decision to begin pulling back on the bond-buying stimulus programs that have helped keep interest rates low around the world.

Now, many countries that had come to rely on those low rates could face a surge in borrowing costs and a period of painful readjustment. Many emerging countries could also be hurt if investors choose to pull their money to chase returns in the recovering economies in the United States and Europe.

''A lot of these currencies are getting trashed and people's standards of living are going down,'' said Michael Purves, the chief global strategist at Weeden & Company. ''There is a potential for social unrest to accelerate.''

The slump this week was the first serious break in a long stock market rally that took the broad United States stock market up nearly 30 percent last year, fueled by signs of an economic recovery. The extent of the rise had led many sophisticated investors to expect some kind of pullback in American stocks.

''This is a convenient and healthy short-term pullback,'' said David Lafferty, the chief market strategist for Natixis Global Asset Management. ''The market really needs some time to digest last year's gains.''

In the rest of the world, the damage so far is less severe than it was during similar turmoil in emerging markets last summer, when the Fed first talked about easing its bond-buying programs. Most markets ended up bouncing back from that episode.

World Stocks Plunge On Fears About Weakened Emerging Markets

FILE - Screen shows world indexes at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
World stock markets plunged Friday, as investors worried about a possible slowdown in emerging markets.

U.S. stock indexes dropped around 2 percent Friday, sinking for a second day.  Markets in Paris and Frankfurt fell about 2.5 percent and Asian markets also mostly finished lower.

Analysts said investors were concerned about sharp drops in the value of currencies in several emerging economies, including Turkey, Russia, South Africa and Argentina, and a report Thursday that Chinese manufacturing is slowing.

In addition, some traders are worried about the withdrawal of global stimulus, especially in the United States, the world's largest economy.  Policy makers at the country's central bank, the Federal Reserve, started to trim their direct support of the American economy this month and could reduce it further when they meet next week.

Some financial experts say the concern is that as the economic stimulus is cut in the most advanced economies, interest rates will rise in the U.S., Europe and Japan, and that investments there will then increase, to the detriment of emerging economies.

UN Envoy: Syria Talks to Resume on Saturday

GENEVA — Representatives of the Syrian government and opposition are to meet face-to-face for the first time Saturday in Geneva, after days of mutual threats to withdraw from the talks.

The United Nations and Arab League mediator, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi made the announcement after two days of meeting separately with the two sides.

“Tomorrow, we expect, we have agreed, that we will meet in the same room,” he said.

Brahimi went so far as to describe his talks with the government and opposition delegations as “encouraging.”

That was surprising at the end of a day during which the Syrian foreign minister threatened to leave if serious talks did not start by Saturday, and the opposition threatened not to hold direct talks unless the government accepted what is called the Geneva 1 communique, which is supposed to be the basis for these talks.

That document, negotiated by the international community 18 months ago, calls for the establishment of a transitional government in Syria.

The Geneva II Talks

Delegates gather in Montreux, Switzerland on Jan. 22
Talks move to Geneva on Jan. 24 and will be facilitated by Lakhdar Brahimi
Syrian government delegation is led by Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem.
Opposition delegation is led by Syrian National Coalition leader Ahmad al-Jarba

The opposition and its allies, including the United States and other western powers, say that means Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must leave office. He and his allies, including Russia and Iran, disagree.

Brahimi acknowledged what he called the differences of interpretation but said both sides accept that this process is based on the communique.

He said they will also likely discuss other issues, including improved access for humanitarian aid. But he said the focus will be on getting a broader settlement to the nearly three-year-long war.

“The huge ambition of this process is to save Syria, no less than that," he said. "So I hope that all three parties – the government, the opposition and the United Nations – will be up to the task.”

Brahimi also called on the two sides' backers in the international community to “do their share” to support the negotiations.

He said he expects the talks to continue through next week, and then to break for the delegations to consult with their leadership.

Analysts have predicted difficulties in the talks, particularly after the acrimonious start to this process on Wednesday, when the Syrian foreign minister and opposition leader made combative statements at an international conference in nearby Montreux.

The acrimony is making it difficult to do what U.S., Russian and U.N. officials want the negotiators to do - start to build trust by talking about local cease-fires, prisoner exchanges and the opening of humanitarian aid corridors.

But that seemed a remote prospect after Friday's rocky start to the day's talks, leaving no new hope for an end to nearly three years of bloodshed or for help for some nine million Syrians who the U.N. says are in dire need of help.

“Both Syrian sides have got very different objectives going into it, said Syria expert David Butter of London's Chatham House, who sees little prospect for significant progress during this round of talks.

"And also, it's in a context where you can't really see either party to the internal conflict actually having any sort of decisive advantage, which would be the basis of some sort of bargaining process,” he added.

Still, there is hope that if they can get past the posturing of recent days. the two sides will find it in their interests to at least start a process here.

And diplomats indicate that their key supporters - the United States and Russia - will be keeping the pressure on to do just that.

Common Form of Leukemia Could be Treatable With New Pill

An experimental pill could turn a lethal cancer into a chronic, but manageable disease like high blood pressure.  If approved for treatment for a common form of leukemia, the compound replaces toxic chemotherapy treatments.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, is a cancer of the immune system’s B cells, which produce antibodies, the frontline soldiers against bacterial and viral invaders.  But when B cells become cancerous, they accumulate in the patient’s organs, including the lymph nodes, pea-shaped organs under the arms and in the groin that help the body recognize and fight infections.  With CLL, the nodes swell many times their normal size.

Richard Furman, a cancer researcher at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, says the drug idelalisib, taken twice a day, causes the cancer to melt away.

“When I say melt away, you can literally see the lymph nodes shrink over the course of a couple of days.  It works that quickly, which is really wonderful," said Furman.

The standard treatment for CLL is Rituxan,  an infusion drug that destroys diseased B cells, but only for a time before the patient relapses.  With repeated rounds of chemotherapy, Furman says the leukemia eventually becomes resistant to Rituxan and patients no longer respond.  The cancer is fatal.

Investigators led by Furman compared a combination of idelalisib and Rituxan, to Rituxan and placebo in a group of 220 CLL patients from around the world (19 medical centers in the U.S. and five other countries).

Six months into the study, 13 percent of those receiving only Rituxan responded to the therapy compared to 81 percent of the Idelalisib combination group.

And 92 percent of participants in that group were still alive a year after the study began, compared to 80 percent in the Rituxan-only group.

The contrast was so significant that the study was halted early so all the patients could receive Idelalisib.

“And with an agent like idelalisib, which is extraordinarily well-tolerated and extraordinarily effective, my hope is that we can make CLL a chronic disease, sort of akin to high blood pressure where patients are able to take a pill a day and keep it in check," said Furman.

The company that makes idelalisib has asked U.S. regulators to approve the drug within six months so it can be made available to people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.  An article on idelalisib is published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
